We ♥︎ our Little City Library

"Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services,
   great libraries build community."
                                                                     - R. David Lankes, Professor of Library Science

Foundation Launches 2020 Annual Campaign!

Most financial support of the MRSPL library comes from donations given during our Annual Campaign, held at this time each winter.  This is our call to everyone in the Falls Church, Arlington, Fairfax, Alexandria areas and beyond who loves and uses our Little City Library...please consider supporting us if you are able to this year!

Foundation Provides Special Funding to Library

Beyond normal annual funding for extra services such as Freegal and Wowbrary, donors to the Foundation have enabled special funding to cover a budget shortfall caused by the library's inability to hold its monthly book sales during the renovation. For the library's 2020/21 budget year, the Foundation will also fund all of the book clubs, as well as all of the Summer Reading prizes (excluding of course the children's coupon books, which are supported by our awesome local business community.

In addition, the Foundation is pleased to fund a new "StoryWalk" program being provided by the MRSPL Childrens' Department.   Each month a picture book will be posted outside, somewhere where kids and families can walk along a path to read and enjoy it.  The December StoryWalk is posted on the fence in front of the library's temporary trailer.

One behalf of the whole community, thank you to all of our donors.  You make these services and projects possible!

Eric Albrecht Receives Chet De Long Award for Outstanding Service to the Library

The Mary Riley Styles Library Foundation has chosen Eric Albrecht as the first recipient of its newly-established Chet De Long Award for Outstanding Service to the Library.

The ceremony of course had no attendees, so we wanted to share Eric's acceptance speech, because his words warmed our hearts and reminded us why we love our library staff:

Thank You!
Imagine being noted, honored, and awarded for doing something you so much love to be doing.
Let me give 3 examples:
Seeing the beaming face of a child when that child gets their first library card and checks out an easy reader
Organizing and co-hosting a Mystery Book Discussion Group for our patrons.
Coaching a patron on how to access and download digital audiobooks from our collection so they can listen to them in their car.
This is a deeply rewarding way to be contributing to the community.
It's said that the library is one of the gems of our Little City.  I think it is, and largely because of the great, innovative and hard-working staff and volunteers.  I am honored to accept the first Chet De Long Award for Outstanding Service as part of this team.
I am grateful and blessed to be working with them, using our talents for the same goal: serving our community.
-Eric Albrecht, 10/23/2020

Thank a Librarian Today!

Have you found yourself extra grateful for our library during these crazy times?

Ever since the library had to close its doors in March, library staff have been working hard to provide online programming, increase their inventory of e-books, and connect patrons to the many online resources on offer. (Visit https://www.fallschurchva.gov/2040/Library-at-Home for a list of services.)

Reopening for curbside service could not have happened without dedication and hard work from all of our library staff.

Anyone who wants to share a message of thanks to library staff is encouraged to click here to submit their message of support and thanks.  If you would like to send a picture of you or family members enjoying books, pictures of kids' drawings for librarians, etc., you can email them to mrsplfoundation@gmail.com.

Thank you for sharing some well-deserved gratitude with the library staff!  The responses have been hung in the temporary library trailer for our library staff to enjoy.

Check out the slideshow below for a full list of our community's responses.
